A World of Keflings places the player in the setting of creating a civilization for a population of small inhabitants. The main gameplay involves collecting materials from the environment and then processing them to construct buildings. Gamers collect components to build objects such as fountains, workshops and castles that determine the purpose and appearance of cities. This process of resource and craft management underlies all development in the world of the simulator, challenging the management of inventory and production lines for expansion.

In A World of Keflings, progression is guided by a series of quests received from local residents and other characters. These goals include specific building projects, such as building a functional robot, along with direct interactions. Other assignments include organizing the rescue of a princess, establishing contact with a dragon, and assisting a witch. It is also possible to compose musical arrangements through a special system, adding another layer to the development of the city.

Fulfilling these various tasks contributes to the growth of settlements. The project offers a multi-user component that supports joint world creation. Up to 8 gamers can join one session online to work on common goals. In this mode, they share the responsibilities of collecting supplies and building the city. This kind of cooperative play allows groups to take on larger endeavors and develop settlements at an accelerated pace.
