Below the Crown takes you on a retro adventure where a deep secret lurks behind the façade of a treasure hunt. Periodic glitches on the screen interrupt the process, prompting you to take psychological tests. The answers to these questions gradually reveal the true background of the events, in the center of which is a powerful wizard, forced to go down into the dungeons. His main mission is to mine gold for the Emperor using unusual tactical skills. The project combines elements of turn-based strategy and exploration of procedurally generated locations, creating a tense atmosphere with hints of 80s science fiction.
The basis of the gameplay is a radical rethinking of chess, freed from protracted games and the need to memorize openings. The journey begins with just one piece - the mage, who, as he progresses, assembles a squad of other creatures, such as Rooks and Archers. Below the Crown makes every mission unique with ever-changing levels. The group’s combat power is enhanced by found spell cards and special abilities, for example, those that grant a shield on dark squares of the field. Successful survival and capture of enemy pieces requires both thoughtful maneuvers and the competent use of magic.
