Kriophobia is a psychological survival horror game in which a scientific expedition to the remote island of Zhokhov turns into a nightmare after encountering anomalous magnetic fields. Instead of scientific discoveries, the team finds themselves in a death trap at a long-forgotten Soviet military base, hidden under the thickness of permafrost. The main character, a young geophysicist named Anna, will have to fight alone for life in the icy corridors of the complex. She is haunted not only by grotesque creatures, but also by surreal visions associated with her foggy past, as if this place itself is trying to pull her into its depths. The search for a way out of the trap forces the girl to plunge deeper into the secrets of this cursed place.
The project returns to the canons of the genre, offering exploration of locations from fixed camera angles, which enhances the cinematic nature of what is happening. Kriophobia’s gameplay revolves around solving intuitive but challenging puzzles and surviving in the face of extreme resource shortages. Encounters here are extremely tense, and often the best choice is flight rather than open confrontation. The deadly cold acts as a separate threat, forcing her to constantly monitor the heroine’s condition and look for any sources of heat. Every decision has weight, and a wrong step can lead to quick death.
A distinctive feature of the title is its unique visual language, where deliberately rough shading in the spirit of comics is combined with picturesque textures of the environment. This artistic technique creates a dark and oppressive atmosphere, reminiscent of graphic novels from the 80s and 90s. The immersion into the world of icy loneliness and horror is enhanced by a soundtrack with pronounced Slavic motifs. Anna’s every step is accompanied by disturbing sounds, revealing fragments of her distorted history and the dark secrets of the Soviet complex.
