Total War THREE KINGDOMS can be played online online, teaming up with a friend or players from all over the world. A single-player campaign is available, as well as the ability to play online on a variety of interactive maps. The pirate version includes the add-ons Warlords of the Yellow Turban Rebellion, Bloody Reign and War of the Eight Princes for free.

Events in Total War: Three Kingdoms begin in ancient China in 190 AD, when the three clans of Wei, Wu and Shu were at war with each other. The gameplay consists of romanticized and classic modes. One of them can be selected before the start of the campaign. Using the opportunity of free online play, you have to choose a side of one of three factions in order to fight enemies in the face of living players. Multiplayer includes all maps and mechanics from the story campaign.

The romanticized mode in Total War THREE KINGDOMS is based on the novel of the same name by writer Chen Shou. In it, the heroes can fight alone against a huge crowd of enemies, since they are endowed with additional skills and abilities, like the Mary Sue characters. The fights are presented in the spectacular wushu style. Each hero has his own unique abilities and has superpowers. Although the plot follows the chapters of a novel, decisions can be made that affect the narrative.

Classic game mode focuses on realism. This is where strategic skills play an important role. Players must apply a commander’s mindset while trying to defeat the enemy army through tactics. The strategic map consists of 70 areas, including 187 regions. Of these, 35 provinces are allocated to Hebei, 23 belong to the Yangtze and another 12 to South China.
