Game Description Under The Yoke tasks the player with taking the Serf family through 250 years of Norman England history, starting in 1085. Characters are endowed with traits of Mind, Body and Spirit that determine their talents and social compatibility. Control covers all aspects of life, from cultivating an acre of land to providing food, rest and communication. Rod begins with minimal supplies and a modest hut, making survival the primary and constant goal. Basic activities for the prosperity of the dynasty: Negotiations with the feudal lord about the conditions of duties and the search for ways to gain the status of a free person. Participation in village life, building relationships with neighbors and competing for influence at the annual Hallmote meetings. Mastering crafts from agriculture to animal husbandry to provide for the family and trade in the market with changing prices. Managing a dynasty over generations, taking into account the unique characteristics and needs of each for its development. Under The Yoke requires mastery of farming, carpentry and animal husbandry. Gameplay involves a variety of activities, from plowing fields to crafting items whose value changes depending on the season. The settlement outside the homestead is a dynamic space for forging friendships or enmities with other households. These families also compete for influence, vying for local positions or jury seats in legal disputes within the community and forming a complex network of relationships. Negotiating with the local lord over feudal dues forms a key mechanic for this project. Serfs are required to work corvée or pay taxes, but the feudal lord’s favor can grant them the status of a free person and expanded rights, such as hunting.
